Compulsive Sexual Behavior

Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB), also referred to as sexual addiction or hypersexuality, is the repetitive and intense obsession over sexual fantasies that cause significant distress in one’s life. People struggling with this condition often see their sexual behavior to be excessive yet they find it difficult to control.

They usually act out impulsively (lacking control) or compulsively (overwhelmed by intrusive obsessive thoughts). CSB usually manifests itself in late adolescence/early adulthood and can be triggered by mood states such as depression, happiness, and loneliness. Some examples of compulsive sexual behaviors include frequent masturbation, cybersex, pornography use, and having multiple sexual partners.

Currently, the American Psychiatric Association does not recognize CSB as a mental health disorder. However, people who are consistently engaging in this behavior may suffer from psychosocial impairment, sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and could damage their personal and professional life. Because of this, it is essential that the person with CSB learn how to manage urges while maintaining healthy sexual activities.

Types of Sexual Addiction

Compulsive sexual behavior is an issue that affects many individuals and relationships all over the world. Sufferers of this condition become preoccupied with sexual thoughts and behaviors to the point where it already interferes with their normal daily functions. Some types of sexual addiction include:

  • Voyeuristic sex – a desire to observe people as they undress, become naked, or engage in sexual activities.
  • Pornography addiction – spending an exorbitant amount of time watching pornographic materials, sometimes even at an inappropriate time and place.
  • Paying for sex – The person feeds his sexual desire by paying for sexually related services (e.g. hiring prostitutes).
  • Intrusive sex – sexual pleasure that is derived from touching people without their consent.
  • Anonymous sex – sexual gratification that is driven by risky encounters with total strangers.
  • Exploitative sex – abusing power and dominance to carry out sexual activity with a vulnerable person.
